Shoulder Gua Sha
How to Use
-
Apply Lubrication: Evenly apply massage oil, body lotion, or Gua Sha oil to the shoulders, neck, and upper back to ensure sufficient skin lubrication and prevent tugging.
-
Scraping Techniques:
-
Along the Meridians: Scrape downward along both sides of the cervical spine, or stroke outward in a radial direction from the base of the neck toward the shoulder (toward the Jianjing point).
-
Targeted Release: The "Jianjing point" at the junction of the shoulders is a key area. Use the rounded edge or corner of the Gua Sha tool to gently massage in clockwise circles or glide smoothly from the inside out to open up vital energy and blood flow.
-
-
Zoning: Follow the principle of "center first, then sides, moving from the inside out," paying special attention to areas with prominent trapezius muscle tension and soreness along the shoulder blade gaps.
Precautions
-
Moderate Pressure, Avoid Excessive Force: The neck muscles on either side of the cervical spine are relatively thin. Never blindly chase heavy bruising or use brute force; a comfortable, warm, and mildly flushed sensation is ideal.
-
Avoid Bony Prominences: Be careful to avoid the spinous processes of the cervical spine (the bones right down the middle). Do not scrape heavily directly over bones to prevent periosteal injury.
-
Keep Warm Afterwards: Pores are open after shoulder and neck Gua Sha, so be sure to protect against drafts and wind. Avoid immediate air conditioning or cold showers to prevent cold air from entering.
Core Benefits
-
Relieves Neck and Shoulder Stiffness: Effectively dredges meridian blockages caused by prolonged desk work or looking down at phones, greatly relieving aching and heavy sensations.
-
Soothes the Trapezius: Helps relax chronically tight and contracted trapezius muscles, improving the "thick back" appearance and fatigue caused by shoulder compensation, leaving shoulders feeling lighter and more relaxed.
